Hello BLUES and SOUTHERN SOUL FANS the Thanksgiving holiday is now upon us and we all give special thanks for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us.I do know that we are all thankful each and everyday but THANKSGIVING DAY we tend to put more emphasis on all of our blessings.I recently attended "DA ULTIMATE BLUES SHOW FIFTH EDITION" and certain events at this show made me reflect back to when and why I decided to share my experiences with the fans of this genre of music.I don't do what I do for money, popularity and any other personal gain.My love and passion for this blues and southern soul music is second to none.I am THANKFUL that so many of the artists, record executives, promoters and especially the fans have embraced me and really appreciate the fruits of my labor.I am so glad to be a positive face and voice for this genre of music.
I met a young lady at the show who had traveled from Mobile Alabama and she approached me and asked me,"Are you Big K9?" and I said yes I am.She told me that she and her friends visit my website all the time and that they were big fans of mine. She told me that she keep up with the blues through my website. She refused to have her picture taken and I do respect that, all she wanted was a hug from me but I have to mention her name,so Melanie Thompson allow me to take this opportunity to say thank you.I've had this happen to me many times before but I don't like to mention these occurences because its not about me,I receive tons of emails from fans nationwide and even a few from abroad who are truly thankful that I am able to share my concert reviews, photos and any other news from the blues and southern soul industry.
Every artist on this recent show all gave several shout outs to Big K9.I would be lying if I said that it doesn't feel good to be recognized by these hardworking artists but it feels good because its positive recognition and I am very greatful but at the same time I am also truly humbled. So I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every artist, record executive, promoter and fans who have showed me so much love and its that love that makes me want to continue to work hard to keep this blues and southern soul music alive and to see its popularity spread to a more broader and mainstream audience. So since Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!
The Washington County Civic Center in Greenville,Mississippi was the venue for this Blues and Southern Soul gathering. My man Rico Owens, the CEO of HUSTLE ENTERTAINMENT was responsible for this spectacular event. The lineup for this show was MISSISSIPPI SLIM,BETTY PADGETT,STEVE PERRY,T.K. SOUL AND SIR CHARLES.When I arrived at the show there were plenty of familar faces in attendance.I was joined in DA DAWG POUND by fellow members Rico Owens,G-Money,Cyerio Hughes(WGNL RADIO PERSONALITY),Keith Walker a.k.a. Big Wedge,Earl Gray a.k.a Big Lick'em(Damn what does that name mean?) and Chet a.k.a Gater who was accompanied by his beautiful wife Shirley who was seated with my girl Bluz Queen and the rest of The Kitty Kitty Club. Also joining us in Da Dawg Pound were special guests Veronica McDowell and Claudette Nawls. It was a byob affair and believe me the packed civic center was ready to get their blues on.The dj had the sounds of Carl Marshall("Good Love Will Make You Cry"),Tyrone Davis,Johnnie Taylor,Omar Cunningham and O.B. Buchana playing as the crowd waited for the show to begin. You know the music from these artist can really stir the soul and the fans were singing and dancing and ready to get this blues and southern soul party started. So with the Da Dawg Pound present and accounted for,the cold Bud Light on ice and the Gin and juice kicking in good people let me take you on this blues and southern soul ride.
The first performer of the night was local artist and fan favorite Mississippi Slim.I've seen his show several times and I have become a big fan myself. In my opinion he is the best opening act in the industry. His show could be a headliner for real but he doesn't seem to care about being a headliner, his greatest joy is to simply entertain the fans.
I've never did an extended review of his performance before but he has a new band now,"DA YOUNG GUNS" a.k.a MISSISSIPPI SLIM GRANDSONS and it consist of one of my co-workers and fellow Dawg Pound member,Cory Latchinson a.k.a. Lil Chris Brown. They are a very talented young group of men who are all in their early to mid 20's.It is so refreshing to see the younger generation embrace this genre of music and make no mistake about it,its not for the money either, they truly love the blues and southern soul music.Mississippi Slim opened his performance with "Sitting Here Thinking" and he made an entrance from the midst of the crowd and they gave the native son a nice ovation as he made his way to the stage. His next song was "Haven't I Been Good To You" and he begin to get the crowd involved as he talked to some of the women down by the stage. His next song,"Down Home Blues" got everyone into a foot-stomping and hand-clapping mode and it also showcased the skills of "DA YOUNG GUNS" as one of the band members did a brief solo on his guitar that would make Albert King smile. His next song was "Take Your Finger Out Of It" and Slim begin to use some very raw and explicit language(grown folks sh*t for real) but it went over very well with the audience. Before his next song he introduced "DA YOUNG GUNS" to the crowd FLY GUY-keyboard,Two-lead guitar,One-bass guitar and my man Cory-drums and the crowd gave them a big ovation. His next song,"Mississippi Boy"got the crowd up and dancing. He closed his performance with my personal favorite "I Was Checking Out,She Was Checking In" and man it sounded oh so good.I can listen to him sing that song all night long. This was the best Mississippi Slim performance that I've ever seen and I hope and pray to see him perform for many years to come.I want to say to "DA YOUNG GUNS" please continue to work hard and don't get content you all can have a big and bright future in this industry. This performance set a hell of a tone for the rest of the show.
The soulful diva,Betty Padgett along with her neice and backup singer Dottie a.k.a. Lady D were up next. She received a huge ovation as they came on stage.I've been blessed to see her perform quite a bit these last few months and her show continues to get better all the time.I've also notice the response that she has gotten from all the males in attendance. She was looking very sexy tonight ya'll.LAWD HAVE MERCY!She opened her performance with "Lovelite(Shine On Me)" and she had it sounding like church up in the civic center and everyone in attendance was ready to testify. She performed a medley of two songs next as she combined Jackie Moore's "Precious,Precious" and Denise Lasalle's "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" and this was masterfully done by her.Her next song was the classic hit "Steal Away" and she has the best version that I've ever heard. She poured a lot into this song as I stood in awe and simply admired this performance.I believe she captured the hearts of everyone as she belted out this song.I stood in total admiration and I felt like "THE MAN' as she told the audience that Big K9 was "MY BABY",I can't lie ya'll I loved that sh*t,fellas eat your hearts out.
Her next couple of songs,"Midnight Hour" and "Rock Your Boat" allowed her and Lady D to shake their tailfeathers. She displayed her freaky side with "Slow Roll It".This diva was cutting up tonight but me and the rest of the guys enjoyed every minute of it.My dawg pound member Big Lick'em couldn't keep his tongue in his mouth(Lol!)She closed her performance with her smash hit "Never Coming Home" and she received her biggest ovation of the night as the ladies now had their time to shine.Sexy, sassy, sultry and soulful all describe Betty Padgett.I'm so glad to see her receive so much love at her shows.Take a bow sweetie, you have arrived and I'm going to let everyone know right now that Betty Padgett is also "MY BABY".Damn good show!
The next performer was my man Steve Perry.About a year ago in Greenville I dubbed him "THE SENSATIONAL ONE" and that was exactly how he opened his performance."You're A Freak" had several of the women down by the stage dancing like the namesake. This cut is the answer song to Shirley Brown's "Sleep With One Eye Open" and the crowd was into his performance already. His next song,"What Are You Talking About?" kept the rump-shaking theme going as the women were truly now in charge. The stage area was dominated with their presence as they danced the night away.Steve took a page out of Usher's book(he kept his shirt on) as he thrilled the ladies with a seductive slow roll it dance routine on "Let Me Go".I've never seen him get down and vulgar like this before(the only thing missing was the bed) but the ladies were really feeling "The Sensational One".He changed the tempo from slow rolling to shake what your momma gave you on "Donkey Donk".His next two songs were ""Come Back Love" and "Its Okay" which is a nice silky ballad that has dominated the southern soul airwaves. His vocals come across superbly on this slow jam.He closed his performance with my personal favorite,"U Can't Raise Her" and the ladies went crazy. This song has become the ladies southern soul anthem and it has also made him very popular with the ladies. He is no longer a sleeper on the southern soul scene. His showmanship was outstanding tonight as he really gave the ladies a thrill. As alaways I want to thank him for giving a shout out to me and DA DAWG POUND.I saw a confident performer on stage and I only expect to see and hear bigger things from "The Sensational One".
The next performer on the night was "The Bad Boy Of Southern Soul",T.K. Soul and before I go into his review allow me to acknowledge his band,"Soul 4 Real".This has got to be one of the top bands in the industry. He opened his performance with "You Ring My Bell" and the women down front were screaming with pure excitement. He was really hyped for this performance as he displayed several splits that would make James Brown shout. His next song,"If You Don't Want Me" received a nice ovation from the crowd, toward the end of this song he paid tribute to all the beautiful women in attendance with a brief version of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" and the ladies loved it.His next song was "My Kind Of Girl" and all the women down front were pleading that they were the right kind for him.He received a big ovation from his adoring fans as he and his band did their now infamous dance routine on "Meet Me At The Spot Tonight".He showcased his vocal depth on Johnnie Taylor's "Try Me".Because he is such a great entertainer(best dancer in the industry) I think sometimes his vocals are overlooked. He did an excellent job on this cut. There must have been plenty of unfaithful people in Greenville because "Cheating And Lying" got everyone up and dancing, its funny how the fans of this genre of music can relate to songs like this,I guess they don't mind putting their business out there. He even gave Big K9 and Da Dawg Pound a shout during this song(Whats up with that T.K.?)He closed his performance with "Party Like Back In The Day" and "It Ain't Cheating Til You Get Caught".Once again T.K. Soul was the man.I've seen his show numerous times and in my opinion he is still one of the top entertainers in the business. He is the first established artist that allowed me to enter their personal world and I will always be thankful for that.He isn't just an entertainer to me,I also consider him a true friend.
The last performer of the night was "THE KING OF SOUTHERN SOUL",Sir Charles Jones. At most shows that I attend people begin to leave when the last artist is about to perform its only about three artist that can keep an entire crowd until the very end of the show,T.K. Soul is one and Sir Charles is another one.Its simply amazing to me that no one had left the show, thats big time ya'll.Before he began his performance the security force on hand wouldn't allow anyone down by the stage so I left DA DAWG POUND and made my way on stage to get some photos of him on stage. He opened up his performance with "Friday" and the ladies begin to make some serious noise.I don't believe the women were even listening to him sing just being in his presence seemed to be enough for them.He did an excellent version of "Little Bluebird" and I likes his version just as much as Little Milton and Johnnie Taylor versions. He left the stage area and went into the crowd singing abbreviated versions of his classic hits such as "Better Or Worse","Natural Woman", and "Just Can't Let Go".He made his way back to the stage and voiced his displeasure about the fans not being able to come down to the stage area, security immediately granted acess and it was a massive stampede of women rushing to the stage area. This was truly one of the damnest things that I've ever seen. His next song was "Slow Roll It" and the now packed down stage area went absolutely wild.On his next song,"Just Like Fire" he was joined on stage by recording artist Nathaniel Kimble and they begin to do a synchronized dance routine that got a thunderous ovation from the crowd. He closed his performance with his classic smash hit "Is There Anybody Lonely".
