FEBRUARY 13,2006:
Last night I attended Rosco "Killer Diller" Miller's Annual Bluz Valentine's Show in Montgomery, Alabama. Steve Perry, "Minister of the Bluz", came on singing Woman With Some Meat On Her Bones. Steve is from Selma (about 25 miles from Montgomery), Alabama. Ladies, if you have never seen him in a live performance, I must let you know that Steve is electrifying...he's the epitome of dirty-dancing!!! His second selection was Shaking That Donkey Donk. Up next were Come Back Love, Nosey Neighbors and Just Can't Let Go. Dressed in red-n-black and passing out roses to women in the audience, Steve was definitely appealing and appeasing. And, of course, You're A Freak had the crowd on their feet. Steve ended with his signature "woman" song, You Can't Raise Her. No one other than T.K. Soul himself came out wearing a black-n-white boxing robe and being led by his bodyguard and manager. One of my personal favs, Meet Me At the Spot was his first selection. Other cuts were My Kind of Girl, If You Don't Want Me and Ring My Bell. Next, he did Single Man for all of the bluz lovers. Without a doubt, he rocked the audience by getting them involved in Where Jody Stay and Cheating and Lying. His last cut was Real Love. T.K. surprisingly brought his niece who sings with him on that cut. Floyd Taylor performed next. I can dig that Floyd doesn't want to be known as "just" Johnnie Taylor's son. But, it's so easy to link him to his dad...put Floyd in a closed room while he's singing and one could easily think that it's Johnnie's voice that's being heard. Not only does he sounds like him, he highly resembles his father. Floyd came out singing, Out On the Town followed by his dad's Got to Love Somebody's Baby, Last Two Dollars, Big Head Hundreds and Runnin' Out of Lies. I must admit that I got a bit emotional as Floyd performed Johnnie's songs. He did a cut from his new album called Spent More Time With You. The building echoed with screams as he sanged Johnnie's Just Because. Floyd ended with Crazy 'Bout That Woman In Red. Willie Clayton, one of my all-time fav, performed next. He came out perfroming a rendition of Marvin Gaye's I Want You. The crowd was extremely receptive of him!!!!His second cut was one of my many favs, Party Like We Used To. He also did Simply Beautiful, My Baby's Cheatin' On Me, Love Me Some You and Love Mechanic. From Willie's new album, he did If You Ever Get Lonely. I especially loved when he mimicked Tyrone Davis as he sanged I'm Going Crazy. Ladies, Willie announced that he is 50-years-old....as energetic as he is, one would never know which leads to his next cut, Wiggle. It was certainly a crowd pleaser as he showed the crowd how to do the Wiggle. A little hip-hop/rap was added in by his son, Willie Jr. Then, Willie slowed it down a bit by performing Unconditionally. His last cut was Three People. As he commenced to leave the stage the MCs, Jerry "Ice Man" Jackson and Darryl E of Hot 105 (Montgomery) asked him to come back to the stage to have a "tongue-rolling" contest. After Ice Man and Darryl rolled their tongues...it was then WIllie's turn. Well, all I have to say is Marvin Sease is not the only one who has a motor behind his tongue!!! Oh, yeah, Ice Man called DJ Krip out...joking that he was bald like Willie Clayton, and that he liked a bald man. The last group was the Temptations Revue featuring the Grammy award winning Dennis Edwards. Only the Tempts could wear purple and gold sequin suits. They came out singing Standing On Top followed by Get Ready, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, Lady Soul, Treat Her Like A Lady and Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Dennis really got the Crowd going when he did Don't Look Any Further. He had some younger women to come from the audience and come on stage. He talked "trash" with the women as they danced with him and other group members. The crowd rocked as Dennis added in Brickhouse (Commodores signature song) with Don't Look Any Further. The group also performed Stay. Their last cut was My Girl, which included the audience participation in the legendary Temptations walk. Last nite I couldn't believe that I was actually seeing the Tempts perform in living color. It's still hard for me to believe. But, I am so glad that I had an opportunity to see such a phenomenon group. The memory and experience will forever live with me. Hope that you guys enjoyed me taking you to the Rosco "Killer Diller" Miller's Annual Bluz Valentine's Show in Montgomery, Alabama.--DOT "Blulover" JANUARY 2,2006: DOWN-HOME-BLUES-GROUP BRING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH OUR VERY OWN KENNY WAYNE AND WILSON MEADOWS.(This review was provided by my friend Bluz-Lover) I attended the New Year's Eve Blast Featuring Kenne' Wayne and Wilson Meadows at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan, Alabama. When I arrived at the show at about 9:30 the house was packed. I received the most warm and gracious welcome from our DHBG members, Hazel and Margie....who introduced me to Verna (Honey) and Atl_single. Upon entering the building, I immediately saw a truck that was hauling extra chairs. Without those extra chairs, there would have been standing-room only in the building. JJ (of Magic 93.1 in Dothan), Darryl E (of Hot 105.7 in Montgomery, Alabama) and Virgil K were the MCs for the show. To get the show off to a great start, the DJ played the Commodores signature song, "BRICKHOUSE." JJ asked everyone to get up and the crowd went wild. People went up to the stage and packed the isles while "getting down" as sounds of the "BRICKHOUSE" echoed throughout the building. Kenne' Wayne came on singing LOVE DOWN at about 10:30. The crowd gave him an explosive reception. You're Gonna' Miss Me was the second song he performed. "The next song is for all of the bluz lovers," Kenne' said. So, what better than a rendition of Z.Z. Hill's, DOWN HOME BLUES? By this time I could no longer stay in my seat so I headed toward the stage. I was lucky enough to get in arm's reach of Kenne'. By the way, as a way of supporting one of our very own, Margie had already been at the front of the stage since the beginning of the show. Then, Kenne' did PUTTIN' OUR BUSINESS IN THE STREET. Naturally, SUPERWOMAN and YOU'RE MY ANGEL are favorites of all Kenne's female fans. He had women swaying, waving their hands, screaming and testifying as if they were at a church revival. Since he just exudes with sensuality, obviously, the women could barely compose themselves. But, even the guys went wild when Kenne' sang A and B CONVERSATION. Adrenaline filled the room as Kenne' and his backup singer started a debate between the men and the women as whether to hang up or pick up the telephone (as in the song, A and B CONVERSATION)...the crowd loved it!!! As he performed WHO IS IT, he got a thunderous ovation as he bumped, grind and gyrated all over the stage. Before he did his last song Kenne' gave a shot-out to the DHBG by asking members to raise their hands and make some noise. His last song was PARTY AIN'T OVER. Indeed, this song had everyone up on their feet. Afterwards, the crowd screamed and pleaded for Kenne' to sing more songs. He attempted to do one last cut but, unfortunately, time wouldn't allow him to do so. He wished everyone a Happy New Year's and thanked his fans for their support. When the show was over Kenne' took pictures with fans. Last but not least, he took a picture with members from the DHBG. Kirk, Kenne's brother and also a DHBG member, who plays guitar in his group, was also included in the picture. Kenne' gave the DHBG members a hug and emphatically thanked them for coming to the show and supporting him. The MCs did the traditional countdown to the New Year followed by Wilson Meadows coming on at about 12:15. Wilson did a renditon of Little Milton's, THE BLUES IS ALRIGHT which, undoubtly, was a crowd pleaser. And, indeed, he couldn't go wrong as he did a tribute to the late, great Johnny Taylor by performing LAST TWO DOLLARS. Wilson especially got the women's attention when he began to belt out the Love Doctor's, SLOW ROLL IT...his slow and sexy dance movements made the female fans go wild. When Wilson did one of his signature songs, BABY, I PROMISE--this time the men were the ones who were swaying, waving their hands, screaming and tesifying as if they were at a church revival. Afterwards, the DHBG members gave expressions of the great time we had together. Then, we hugged, vowed to keep in contact and wished each other well as we headed toward our prospective destinations.
