MARCH 5,2006:
" 2006 MILLINEIUM BLUES SHOW"
Hey Blues and Southern Soul fans, last night I attended The 2006 Millineium Blues Show held in Greenwood,Mississippi.I attended the same show exactly one year ago. This show will be etched in my mind forever. This same show was Jackie Neal's last performance. Before the show I sat and reflected back to that show.We were all still mourning the loss of our beloved Tyrone Davis.I remember how each performer that night paid tribute to TD and every performance that night was electrifying.I had always enjoyed her music but after watching her perform for the very first time I became a big fan.
Fast forward one year later and in the very same building I was brought to tears.Last night the lineup was the very same lineup from a year ago.T.K. Soul,Willie Clayton,Denise Lasalle, and Marvin Sease minus Jackie Neal and the addition of The Legendary Clarence Carter. The people in Greenwood really know how to bring a Blues show to life.It was standing room only and everybody was having a good time.By now I was starting in on my Gin & Juice and chasing it with Bud Light.Let me now take you on this Blues & Southern Soul ride.
My man T.K. Soul opened up the show with a bang.I've seen his show more times over the last couple of years than any other artist and its truly amazing how it contiues to get better and better each time.He began the show with "Meet Me At The Spot Tonight" and the ladies were into the show early.A dozen of more women all ran down to the stage to get a closer look at the Bad Boy of Southern Soul.He and his band(Soul 4 Real) went into a dance routine and the crowd erupted.Like a magnet all eyes were drawn to him.The young man has much charisma and his showmanship is among the best in the game. The ladies were making it clear that T.K. Soul was THE MAN.He went into a number of his songs"If You Don't Want Me","Short Skirts,Tight Jeans","Real Love Is Calling", and"Cheating And Lying".His biggest ovations came when he performed "Where Jody Stay" and "Ring My Bell".He closed his performance with my personal favorite "My Life".
Willie Clayton came on next and just like T.K. Soul I've seen his show quite a few times over the last couple of years. He opened up his performance with "Party Like We Use To Do" and the people in Greenwood must have all had a flashback because they all jumped to their feet.He followed that with "Simply Beautiful", and "Cheatin On Me".Next he performed my personal favorite "I Love Me Some You".Whew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I can listen to Willie sing that song all night long.He had the house slow dancing throughout the entire song.He performed "Love Mechanic","If You Ever Get Lonely"(big ovation),"Three People Sleeping In My Bed","Wiggle" and "Unconditionally" which got a thunderous ovation from the crowd. He ended his show with something that I had never seen from Willie Clayton.Hip-Hop?Willie rocked the house with a rendition of Kanye West's "Gold-Digger".He was joined on stage by his son Young Bap.I've seen Young Bap do a rap during his father show before but now they took it to another level.Southern Soul singer Willie Clayton and Young Bap did Kanye justice on this night,I even stood up for this one.Young Bap has some serious skills on the mic and him and his father did a tight dance routine that blew the roof off the building.Willie Clayton was truly dynamic on this night.Great performance.
The Queen,Denise Lasalle came on next and like always I just melted. She is my favorite female artist and I always look forward to watching her perform.I know her show like the back of my hand but its always exciting for me to see her.She kicked her performance off with "Down Home Blues" and it was so refreshing to see the people in Greenwood all giving her a thunderous ovation.Following T.K. Soul and Willie Clayton is no easy task but The Queen had the crowd up and dancing.By now the place had turned into a Blues party. She performed my personal favorite "Trapped" and I was on my feet with Bud Light in hand moving to this song. This is one of my all time favorite songs. It sounds better everytime I hear her sing it.She followed that with "Snap,Crackle & Pop" and the crowd was still up and dancing. She closed the show with "My Tu-Tu" and she was joined on stage by her son(Ray) and grand-daughter(Samantha).She was trying to get Samantha to dance but she said she didn't feel like dancing and that had the crowd laughing. She asked if anyone wanted to dance with her son?A large woman from the crowd came on stage and she and Ray did the damn thing. They received a roaring ovation from the crowd. After her performance I talked with her briefly about her career and she assured me that as long as GOD would allow her to perform she will continue to do so for years to come.I hollered at her son Ray and tried to get a picture with her grand-daughter but that liitle girl is a busy body and could not stand still.
Dr. C.C.,Clarence Carter came on next and this was my first time having the opportunity to see him perform. As I was watching this Legend being led to the stage I could only think about some of the greats(Johnnie Taylor,Tyrone Davis & Little Milton ) who have gone on to Soul Heaven.I was glad that I was here tonight to see this living legend perform.Anyone who is familar with any of his shows must know what I just found out last night. The man has a big since of humor. He can talk s**t with the best of them. His raw language got the audience attention,I know it got mine.He opened his performance with "Too Weak To Fight" I hadn't heard this song in years. With my Bud Light in hand I again stood up and I would remain that way for his entire performance. He performed "Take It All Off" followed by Ray Charles "What I'd Say"(huge ovation) and then he performed one of my father's favorite sons "Patches".I got a little emotional during that song because I began thinking about my Pops.It would have been nice if he were here to enjoy this with me.Next he performed my personal favorite "Slip Away" and the house was feeling it.Old school was bringing the house down.He closed the show with his signature song "Strokin".It was an old couple( they had to be in their 70's) on the floor dancing and soon all eyes were soon on them. They must have realized it too grandma and grandpa started to bump n grind like grown folks and they received probably the biggest ovation of the night.I was glad to see the old people enjoying themselves but I must have laughed openly for several minutes afterwards.Only this blues and southern soul thang will you see the senior citizens representing like they were a couple of newlyweds on a honeymoon. You got to love it.
The last performer on this night was The Marvelous Marvin Sease. It was late and many in attendance began making their way for the exits but not me.I have been a big fan of his for many years. He opened the show with "Clean Up,What I Messed up".The remaining fans gave him a nice ovation. He began to do his testimony and I don't know if this is something he actually experienced but its a fixture in his performance. He did a limited number of songs probably because of the time(it was about 2:00 am)."Do It Tonight" and "Please Take Me" got the biggest ovations. He closed the show with the song that shot him to superstardom"Candylicker".I always enjoy seeing him perform this song. The females flocked around the stage as he displayed his motor to the young ladies. Its amazing how after all these years the women still melt during this song.I was glad to see that he was looking better physically. The last few times I saw him perform I thought that he was starting to decline in health.I hope that he is doing fine and that I will get the opportunity to see him perform for lots of years to come.
I had a great time with this blues and southern soul thang last night and I hope that all of you enjoyed the ride.MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. Peace And Love.
